Here at Thomson Broadbent, we have always believed in developing people and supporting long-term careers, and that includes offering practical, work-based routes into the property industry. We actively encourage vocational training and professional qualifications, giving people the opportunity to build their skills while gaining real-world experience.
Two members of our team are currently progressing through ‘earn while you learn’ pathways, combining on-the-job training with professional qualifications as they work towards recognised careers in the sector.
Aden joined us in September 2024 as a trainee surveyor after studying construction management at Moulton College. With a long-standing interest in property, he was keen to gain hands-on experience rather than follow a traditional full-time university route.
“I’ve always been interested in property and construction, and university didn’t feel like the right path for me,” said Aden. “I wanted to earn as I learn and get stuck into real work. The qualification I’m working towards will take four years, but the first couple of years are all about learning on the job and building experience.”
Now in his first office role, Aden says the move from retail has been challenging but rewarding.
“There’s a lot to take in, but I’m really enjoying it,” he added. “I’ve been given responsibility and trust, and I feel genuinely supported. I can really see a future here.”
Also progressing through work-based training is Holly, who joined our team nearly three years ago after previously working in safeguarding and pastoral care within education. What began as a temporary role has since developed into a clear and rewarding career path.
“I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did,” said Holly. “I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do at the time, but people here saw something in me. I moved from consents administrator to consents officer, and I’ve recently been promoted again to consents team lead.”
Following discussions with the senior team, Holly began working towards becoming a qualified surveyor in April last year and is now on track to qualify in summer 2027.
“The training is a real mix of learning and doing,” she explained. “There’s a lot of in-house support alongside written work and logging practical experience. I love the practical side of the job and being able to learn from experienced professionals.”
For both Aden and Holly, the ability to earn a salary while developing professionally has been essential.
“I’ve never been made to feel like just a number,” Holly added. “I’ve been treated with respect from day one, and that makes a huge difference.”
Their experiences reflect a wider culture across our business, where trust, progression and long-term development are actively encouraged. Many of our team members have been with us for a significant length of time, creating continuity and depth of experience throughout the firm.
Outside of work, Aden enjoys spending time at the gym, playing golf and working on cars, while Holly enjoys reading fantasy fiction, exploring gothic architecture and visiting the seaside.
